Frequently Asked Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THERAPY

Light Backdrop
  • Our first session is focused on understanding your story and what you hope to gain from therapy. Together, we’ll identify goals and begin to get a sense of the patterns and themes that show up in your life.

  • Email me at deniseevanstherapy@gmail.com to book your first appointment. Once we have connected, I will provide you with my booking link, so that you can book at your own convenience.

  • Yes. I recommend in person therapy when possible, but recognize that providing virtual therapy can make therapy more accessible, and that some people find therapy more comfortable from the comfort of their own space.

  • My services are not covered by OHIP; however, I am a Registered Social Worker and most extended insurance plans will reimburse all or part of the fees. The fees that are not covered by the extended benefits, may be claimed on your tax returns as a medical expense.

  • Denise Evans Therapy holds a 48 hour cancellation policy. This allows for more time so that cancelled appointment slots may be booked by other clients. Unexcused no shows or late cancellations will be automatically billed/charged at 100% of the total cost of the session booked.

  • Many clients begin by having weekly appointments, however, the frequency varies and is adjusted to client availability and needs.

  • I review my session fees each January to ensure they remain consistent with industry standards and reflect the ongoing costs of maintaining a high-quality, sustainable practice. Any fee adjustments are communicated in advance and made thoughtfully, with consideration for accessibility and fairness.

If a fee change creates financial strain, I encourage clients to reach out - I hold a small number of reduced-fee spots and do my best to accommodate when possible.

  • When I work with teens, confidentiality is essential. It helps them feel safe to speak openly, build trust, and engage more fully in the therapeutic process. This means that, in general, the specific details of what your teen shares with me remain confidential, just as they would in adult therapy. However, parents still play an important role. With your teen’s consent, I may share general themes, recommendations, or ways you can support them at home. I also welcome your input about anything you’re noticing in their behaviour, wellbeing, or family dynamics.

My overall goal is to support your teen’s wellbeing while maintaining a healthy, transparent partnership with caregivers.

If parents are looking for more in-depth guidance than the updates I can offer while working with their teen, or if their child does not consent to parent involvement, I refer them to my colleague, Clair Bowman. Clair has extensive experience working directly with caregivers and offers the dedicated support they’re seeking.

Both Clair and I are extensively trained in Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), an approach that gives caregivers powerful, practical tools for supporting their child’s emotional healing.

No matter the structure, the goal is always the same: strengthening the family system so everyone feels more connected, capable, and supported.

Patterns start to make sense when you learn where they come from.
